Here are some examples of log home terminology to help you better understand.
Chink. To apply a synthetic or mortar filling around all exterior door and window frames, wall corners, and small gaps in the exterior wall
Draw Knife. A tool used in the mill to scrape the remaining bark off the log and give it a hand-crafted look
Scribing. Cutting and fitting woodwork to an irregular surface. Often used in handcrafting of logs
Hand-peeled. The process of removing the bark and outer layer (cambium) of a log. Hand-peeling is usually done using a drawknife, although some companies use machines to achieve a hand-peeled look. Green Logs. Green logs are logs that are used within weeks and sometimes even days of having been cut. Purlin. A roof support beam that runs parallel to the ridge beam and the long sides of a home
Wood preservative. Specialized finish formulated to protect wood from the deteriorating effects of wind, rain and sunlight, and attacks by fungus, mold, mildew and insects.
